Mischa Kuball is the new Artist in Residence for the city of Monheim am Rhein

Monheim am Rhein is gaining an artistic addition: internationally renowned conceptual artist Mischa Kuball has been Artist in Residence for Monheim's art since the fall. His work complements the city's art education offerings, and he hopes to build new bridges between art and urban society in the future.
For almost five decades, Kuball has been using the medium of light to create new ways of experiencing spaces and to make social and political issues visible. His works combine architecture, perception, and participation. Many citizens already know him through the artwork monheim_cube, which has long since become a striking landmark in the urban space.
In Monheim am Rhein, Kuball wants to further strengthen the dialogue between art and citizens. Instead of a studio, he sees the entire urban space as a place of creation. Kuball focuses on participation and involvement: “It's about breaking down barriers and inhibitions in dealing with art and creating access,” he says, describing his motivation. Corresponding events are in the planning stage.
Kuball's work complements the city's existing art education programs. As an “outsider artist,” he wants to work closely with local art stakeholders and connect existing art venues. This could lead to the creation of an urban choreography that turns art in public spaces into a shared experience. Another focus of his work is media education. Kuball develops approaches especially for children up to the age of three that enable early contact with art through haptic experience and sensory access. A further perspective is therefore to link his work to the “Overall Concept for Media Education in Monheim am Rhein.”
With Mischa Kuball's residency, the city of Monheim am Rhein is continuing its commitment to making art accessible and tangible in public spaces. As a networker and catalyst between the local art scene and the state and national art world, Kuball is helping to further open up the artistic discourse in Monheim am Rhein.
