Symposium: Kunst im öffentlichen Raum

22. and 23.11.24 I Museum Dortmund /DE

In cooperation with the Baukunstarchiv NRW, the Department of Art in Public Space of the City of Dortmund is organizing a two-day symposium on 22 & 23 November 2024, which will include an analysis with experts from various disciplines on the conditions for the realization of new projects and works of art as well as on the prerequisites for the maintenance of the stock of art in public space.

As part of this investigation, particular attention will be paid to the involvement of (external) experts, political bodies and administrations in the relevant processes. In spatial terms, the analysis covers the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, while the time frame covers the past ten years.

The event is divided into three thematic blocks:

The first thematic block will shed light on the relationship between museums and art in public spaces. This is done by analyzing cases in which museum institutions take on the scientific and/or technical care of works of art in urban spaces.

The second thematic block is dedicated to the investigation of case studies in which actors intervene at a supra-municipal level with works of art in public space. Furthermore, cooperative constellations and decentralized projects are included in the study.

The third thematic block will focus on various large cities that express the cultural-political claim of shaping urban space with artistic means or temporarily using public spaces in different ways.

To conclude the symposium, a panel discussion will take place on 23.11.2024, in which possible developments of art in public space for the city of Dortmund will be discussed against the background of the various models presented.

Participation is free of charge. Please register via the following link:
