Projektionsraum 1:1:1/Spinning Version

1995

The installation “Projection Room 1:1:1/Rotation” addresses the idea of space and the conceptual development from surface to space; characteristic of the artists' works is the high degree of utopian charge and spiritual discharge, especially in Moholy-Nagy's work.

Two slide projectors project basic geometric material onto the wall. The material overlaps in a spatial mathematical ratio of 1:1:1. The overlap creates double the amount of light/intersection. The position of the projectors is determined by the room diagonals. Glass plates are attached in front of the projection lenses, which, hanging from the ceiling and motor-driven, “drive” a reflection of the projection through the room. The projected image remains seemingly static, while the reflection is subject to permanent movement.

The constant overlays create an “energetic” field of geometric compositions that are cut and shaped by the real proportions of the room, e.g., a circle is transformed into an ellipse, a square is transformed into a rhombus, etc.

References to Moholy-Nagy's “Light Requisite” from 1922/30 are entirely intentional. The compositional power of this light-space modulator lies in its apparent infinity of light and space traces generated by the apparatus. The “Projection Room 1: 1: 1 / Rotation” aims to build on this and is therefore dedicated to László Moholy-Nagy. Quote: Light is a border area: it forms volume and space.
