platon’s mirror

2011 ff.

The idea for "plato's mirror" is based on one of the most influential texts in European literature: Plato's Allegory of the Cave. It formulates the distinction between two forms of reality: visible reality and the (true) reality of ideas. For an artist like Kuball, who deals with the phenomenon of light in his art like no other, the allegory of the cave was a challenge for artistic exploration. In simultaneously simple and highly effective arrangements with projectors and reflective silver foils, photographs and videos, Kuball creates spaces that are to be understood as parables of the Platonic cave situation, while in his photographs and videos he translates the complex relationship between light source, reflection, silhouette and image into seemingly endlessly expanding levels of mediation, in which reality is constantly reconstituted as the reality of its reflection.
